UWC (United World Colleges) is a global education movement that makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. MUWCI is one of 18 UWCs worldwide. Set on a lush 175-acre biodiversity reserve outside Pune, India, we are an international, pre-university residential college. Our IB programme has a unique focus on academic challenges, experiential learning, and community living.

UWC Global Movement History

UWC’s seeds were sown at the height of the Cold War. German educator Kurt Hahn, while attending a conference at the NATO Staff College in 1958, was impressed with how former World War II adversaries were working together. He believed that educating young people from around the world together would help prevent future conflict, and in 1962 the first UWC was borne from this idea. Hahn believed that education should help students navigate both success and failure and make them resilient, and he envisaged a new college that equipped its students to deal not just with formal education but also with life.

UWC’s Role in the IB Programme

UWC is not merely a participant in the IB Programme — it has played an essential role in developing the IB for more than 50 years.

Working with the Geneva International School and the United Nations School, UWC Atlantic College helped develop the IB and, in 1971, it became the first college in the world to offer the IB to the exclusion of all other qualifications. Since then, every UWC worldwide has offered the IB Diploma Programmeto its students.

UWC Committees

The UWC National Committees

UWC depends on the dedication and expertise of a network of volunteers — known as national committees — to find and select many of our students. There are more than 3,000 volunteers in 155 countries worldwide, making it the most extensive selection network in the world.

The national committees consist of UWC alumni, parents of alumni, education professionals and community leaders who have embraced UWC’s mission and values. In India, the United World College Committee of India situated in Mumbai takes care of all selections of Indian residents and non-resident (NRI) students.
